Music and Dance
Dancing is an especially productive way to enhance physical fitness. Although it’s fine (and easy) for older adults to enjoy music and dance in their own homes, going out to experience it presents a wonderful opportunity to boost their socialization. Meeting people and spending time with them is a great way to decrease isolation, as well as give your loved one something to look forward to.
What many people don’t know about music and dance is that they can help strengthen or bring back memories. And not just memories of happy times, but those related to how to do things. This is because of something called “muscle memory.” These memories are stored in your brain, but your muscles use them as their go-to connection when performing tasks.
Perhaps the most special benefit of music and dancing is one that can’t be measured: the way it can lighten an older adult’s spirit. The ability to express ourselves through song and movement has been enjoyed by people for thousands of years, and today’s older generations are no different.
Valentines Day
Valentine’s Day is often a joyful occasion, filled with fond memories and fun expressions of love. But for families who have loved ones living with Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia, the day may bring feelings of apprehension instead. It can be difficult to know how to make Valentine’s Day special for your elderly loved one when they are dealing with memory loss and behavioral changes – especially when many traditional activities aren’t possible anymore.
At Larchfield House, we know Valentine’s Day is about celebrating love, and even those living with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia can still enjoy special moments despite memory loss or confusion. With a bit of preparation and by making the day low-stress, this home can make sure that everyone feels the love.
Valentines Party was prepared with love and care for the residents in this home. We also invited a entertainer which gave warmth through his voice. Enjoyment while caring to the residents is what our goal is, seeing their smiles is something you’ll always look for.
